New Sails for McVay Falcon 16

Postby reitzelst » Mon Feb 14, 2011 10:09 pm

Well, my wife and I stretched out our original 1962 mainsail this fall to put away for the winter, tugged it gently to remove some wrinkles, and it split. It's been patched and sewen numerous times and I thought it was time to get a new main.

For those in Ontario, I went to Sobstad Sails in Barrie, Ontario.

The main sail was $675.00 (no numbers or reef points). I expect the jib will be cheaper, but not much. I shipped the old sails by bus, and when the new sails are ready, they ship them back.

I had sent both my original main sail and jib to Sobstad and they have traced them and now have the patterns on file. For anyone interested I've provided their contact information below:

What material did you have your new ones made from?

Sorry for not responding sooner Dave. Unfortunately I can't find my receipt now. However I have contacted Sobstad and asked them what was used.
I've used the sails this summer and am very happy with them. Its amazing how much better the boat sails when the sails retain their proper shape, particularly when beating into the wind.

I'll let you know when I hear back from Sobstad.
